p37 One of the most prominent sculptors of the 20th century was Albin Polasek. He retired to Winter Park, near Casselberry, in 1950. He built a home, gallery, gardens and chapel bordering Lake Osceola and continued to sculpt and paint despite having a stroke, paralyzing his left side. Today you can tour the home and chapel with a guide. The main room of the home contains sculptures and paintings. You can tour the gallery and gardens on your own where many sculptures, many of religious themes, are in the gardens.
Polasek was born in Monrovia (now part of the Czech Republic) in 1879. He immigrated to the US in 1901. He later became the head of the sculpture department at the Art Institute of Chicago for almost 30 years. He died in 1965 at 86 when the estate became a foundation so generations could enjoy his sculptures here. Most of his sculptors are in Chicago, other US cities, and Europe.
